Cacher Stats Web site by the Grand High Phubah

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

What a weekend.  We took the opportunity to attend the first annual 4×4/pizza geocache event in the mountains outside of Denver.  It sure gave me some content to work on about the different types of caches and cachers we encountered this weekend.  But first off I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Grand High Phubah, he is very passionate about the sport with over 5000 finds.  The coolest thing he has done is he created a web site that ranks all the geo-cachers around the world by their finds, ( #1 has over 22 thousand, that is some one with a lot of spare time ) it is www.cacherstats.com and it is worth checking out.

I get paid to Geocache in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

Categories: Caches we have found..

So if any one has donated to my cause from my previous post, I thank you, that money will be put to good use furthering the study of Adventures in Colorado.  But for all to know, the secret to getting paid to geocache is #1 get a job as a off-road tour guide in this area and #2 talk your customers in to searching for a local cache that you have been dieing to find.  Thats how I do it any how for example 18 May 07, my first tour of the summer.  I pick up Scott & Mary and Joe & Ruth at the Chine Clipper, a very nice B.B in Ouray Colorado.  It is rather early in the year but we are able to make it as far as the Toilets above Twin Falls in Yankee Boy Basin then we headed back down with about a hour to spare in their 4 hour tour.  I mention the Portland  Cache (way point GC847A) near the Portland Mine in the Amphitheater.  After quickly explaining what geocaching is they are excited to give it a try.  I punch in the Cords then hand the G.P.S to Scott as he becomes the Navigator.  As we climb up towards the Portland Mine in the Pinzgauer (our tour rig) Mary says,on several occasions (well that looks like the end of the Road), but we end up within 50 ft of the Cache.Scott, Mary, Ruth and Joe within 50 ft of the Portland Cache.

Scott the Navigator says, it looks like it is at the top of this Mine Dump pile so up we go, along the way we get a interesting view down on a mineral stained Waterfall.

Lookind Down on a mineral stained Waterfall.
We make it to the entrance of this Mine when Scott comments that we are right on the way point, I tell them that  this is as close as we will get with the G.P.S, we are within 10 ft and now it is up to our own instinct.  After a little bit of searching and some help from me, we score the Cache.  They are all excited and sign the Log Book, then we head back to the Pinzgauer felling a closure in our tour.

The sucessful Cachers heading back to the Tour Rig.

All this time mind you I am getting paid by Dave of Dave’s Mountain Tours,so yes I am getting paid to Geocache (jealous yet).  I really do enjoy my job and the folks I meet, and it is always fun to introduce folks to the sport of Geocaching.  I hope these folks will pursue it further on there own.

See You In the Hills!

Alpine Paradise’s Geocache Marathon

Posted on March 28th, 2007 by Clay.
Categories: Caches we have found..

Over the past few week we had an opportunity to travel to 3 states on two separate occasions and we searched out 13 Geocaches and found 11, which for us is a real Marathon. We felt like we had accomplished a lot yet we have yet to break 50 finds, then you look at these folks about to break 5000 and you wonder if they have a real life. Non the less here is a quick run down on our adventures.

Our first trip was a delivery of tipi poles to a spot just out side of Zion so we traveled from Western Colorado down I-70 then cut off south down to Zion National Park and tried to hit Geocaches all along the way and near the park.

The next week after our trip to Zion we delivered 3 Yurts to a little town/ski area called Red River, New Mexico which is not to far from Angelfire and Taos New Mexico.Vetrans Memorial in Angelfire,New Mexico.

There was a neet Geocache at the Vetrans Memorial near Angelfire, New Mexico.Vetrans Memorial near Angelfire,New Mexico.

Geocaching tend to bring you to many Veterans Memorials, but this was the most well done one I have seen.Helicopter pilot at the Vetrans Memorial near Angelfire New Mexico.

I wonder how long he has been sitting in that Chopper anyway?

We decided to trade Geo-Moe for a little wind up puppy we found at the Noname geocache near Saguache, Colorado.

A view from the oddfellows geocache in Gunnison,Colorado.

Finally a little closer to home, this was in Gunnison Colorado, called the Oddfellows geocache.

That of course wasn’t everything but it does give you a glimpse of the variety of territory we covered and the crazy Geocaches we found. Geocaching truly is fun and sometimes frustrating, but always an adventure.

Next Stop Impyville. Way Point GC11NYD

Posted on March 26th, 2007 by Clay.
Categories: Alpine Paradises Caches.

This is our newest Cache, placed on the 25th of March 07, my 46th Birthday. I had given a ride to this old character name Roger a number of years ago. He had driven delivery vehicles up to Telluride during the 50s and 60s and was just loaded with little tidbits of history which he was more than willing to share with me on our ride to Telluride. As we were passing this wide spot just up leopard creek 1/4 mile from Placerville he told me that this used to be Impyville. I told him that I didn’t think Imps existed. He then told me about the Imply ( or maybe spelled Implie) family, there was Ma & Pa, the two boys plus wives and children. He told me the Implys where Mechanics and they had a shop and housing of some sort for the whole clan. The Durango,Rio-Grand,Southern Rail Road went by very close to this little community and there is just a little bit of a structure that looked like a landing by the Tracks to unload off the Train and I choose this spot to place our Cache.

the structure in Impyville were the Geocache is.

Hence the name, but after placing the Geocache I noticed a water line sticking out of the ground and threw the structure. At this point I am not sure what this structure was for, part of the floor of a house? Did the Implys have running water and if so was it just a well?

I started poking around a little more a found several more Pipe lines popping out of the ground plus a large pipe that could have been the casing of a well at one time. These Implys were a little more sophisticated then I had originally thought, heck we don’t even have a Well yet. Poking around even more I start finding a bunch of old Auto part,Generators,Brakes,Horn and etc which proved that at least the Mechanic part was true.

artifact from Impyville.

Non the less this looked like a easy and convenient spot for a Geocache, I filled the Geocache with variety of artifacts that I had collected over the years thinking that there wouldn’t be much to find around here but surprisingly there is a bit.

I do wonder what ever happened to the Implys and to all the structures and who actually owns this property, but I think it is public now. I hope that by just posting this I may learn more. I had wrote a post about the McCarty Gang Cache, next thing you know I got an E-Mail from Tom McCarty’s Grand daughter so you never know.

The Alpine Luxury limo rig at Impville.

I placed this Geocache after doing a trip from the Montrose Airport to Telluride for Alpine Luxury Limo who I work for a bunch in the winter. So here is a free plug to my friends there, if you are looking for the best ride to To-Hell-U-Ride, call Alpine Luxury Limo at (970)728-8750 and ask for Clay as your driver.

But enough of that, please comment if you know anything about this area, or for any reason.

Thanks: Clay

Adventure Geocaching, may I suggest the McCarty Gang Cach’e.

Posted on March 5th, 2007 by Clay.
Categories: Caches we have placed, Adventure Geocaching.

I have been thinking about this for awhile and decided to create this new category in my Blog dedicated to what I am calling adventure Geocaching.

I am looking for your help with:

1: The definition of an Adventure Geocache. What I am kind of thinking is that just making it to the Cache is an adventure, the terrain rating would be a 5 starer ( Yankee Boys Cache on to of Mt. Sneffles would easily fit here ). This rating could be either an intense hike/climb or a exciting stretch of 4×4ing. I could imagine the actual difficulty of finding the Cache could entail an adventure also (I hear of these under water Caches that I think might fit this area).

2: kind of along the same lines is what are the standard or quality’s that justify the title Adventure Cache?

3: I would also like your input on some of your favorite Adventure Caches so that I could assemble a collection and try to schedule out my summer to rack up some adventure.

Please Include the way-point, the general area and a description of why you feel this cache qualifies as an Adventure Cache. Include your E-Mail address and after I assemble the Adventure Cache Collection I will send every-one a copy. I live on the Western Slope of Colorado and will concentrate on this area, or the 4-corners, but if you think they qualify, I still would like to hear about it. Please either comment this Blog or if you like you can E-Mail me - clay@alpineparadise.com- please include a story about your adventure and a few photos if you can.

But May I Suggest the McCarty Gang Cache GCW813.

The McCarty Gang who road with Butch Cassidy, cached away $2000 in Gold coins left over from a Bank robbery in Telluride in a canyon still called the Robbers Roust on maps. Please visit our Treasure Hunting Adventures in Colorado Blog to learn more of this real Cache and the on going search.

The geocache is located East of Nucla Colorado off of 25 Mesa Road down an old Ute Indian trail at the bottom of Tabeguache Canyon.

Tabeguache Canyon at the start of the Indian Trail.

The Adventure of this Cache would be finding the start of the Indian Trail then the jaunt to the bottom and back but me and ol Judd made it in about 3-4 hours so it can’t be that bad.

Judd Redfield near the McCart Gang Geocache.

Clay Greathouse ( Alpine Paradise ) near the McCarty Gang Cache.

We place this geocache on the 10th 0f June, 2006, and as of this posting no one has found this Cacheand thats because no one has been up to the adventure not because it is that hard to find. Yes that is a challenge, who ever is first find of this geocache will receive honorable mention and Praise ( and any link you would like placed ) on this Blog. Poor old Ridgway Rodney the travel bug is probably looking forward to a change of Scenery.

View from McCary Gang Geocache looking up from Tabeguache Canyon.

Though the scenery ain’t terrible as you can see from this shot from the McCarty Gang Geocache looking up from Tabeguache Canyon.

May the Best Geocacher win!

The Geo-Lodge Tipi.

Posted on March 3rd, 2007 by Clay.
Categories: The Geo-Lodge.

GCPA6D

This is a special Geocache, one that we take special pride in . What we did is place this tipi on the corner of our property and placed a Cache in it. So you are thinking that I just spoiled it for you, and you are right, but the main reason I tell you this is so you can plan.

The Geo-Lodge Tipi.

What we would like to encourage you to do is spend the night in it. I have a dream of travelling around the country and being able to find Geo-Lodging along the way. Now you will notice that I am not going to give you directions to the Lodge, but if you see this sign you will know you are on the right trail.

The Geo-Lodge Sign.

At this point it is pretty primitive, in fact I noticed that the old cover did not survive the Winter and we are trying to put together the money to buy a new cover, My wife home sews for Earth Works Tipi located in Montrose and she can get us a pretty good deal on a cover and personally sew up a liner and floor cover, but we are looking for some help. We would except any donation you can swing ( check out our donation button in top right hand box ) and would love to hear from you( clay@alpineparadise.com ). What we would like to do is make it very comfortable and make it available to any one that reads this and can find it with a G.P.S.

A view of Mnt Sneffles from the Geo-Lodge.

View of the Matterhorn, Weatterhorn and Uncompagre Peaks from thr Geo-Lodge.

A view of the Matterhorn, Wetterhorn and Uncompagre Peaks from the Geo-Lodge.

As you can see not all the treasure related to Geocaching are found in a Ammo Box.

As of this posting the Lodge is not excisable because we are haveing the best ( or worse depending how you look at it ) Winter in 10 years but check back to this Blog and Ill keep you up to date of conditions, and progress with the improvements on the Tipi.

I would also ask that you let me know if and when you plan on spending some time up here by eather E-mailing me ( clay@alpineparadise.com ) or calling me (970) 596-2158.
